General Appearance

Large dog, cobbily built, wary or suspicious expression, which is also intelligent, expresses enthusiasm and willpower, is very attentive and pays attention to all movement;

Head

In proportion with the body, though heavier than that of the rough-haired Belgian Shepherd;

Flat, not too broad between ears;

Strong, with tight fitting teeth and very large canines;

Rather broad, rough-haired;

Close fitting;

Cropped and carried upright, very mobile; the size is in proportion with the overall dog;

Well straight and with strong bone;

Cropped, set on high; a lot of cattledogs are born with a stumpy tail;

Small and round with thick and firm pads;

Coat

Harsh, dry and wiry, semi long, covers the body and legs well; the topcoat covers a fine and tight undercoat; on the head the hair is shorter, except above the eyes, aside of the mouth and under the chin, where the hair is longer and thus forms brows, a moustache and a beard which are characteristic for the breed;

Colour

Black, black topped with grey, very dark blue, which is more a shade of black;

Size

From 60 to 70 centimetres at withers; bitches are a bit smaller than males.
